Gay men don’t fall in love with women. Do they?
Philip is a gay man working for a conservative corporation. After his recent promotion, he needs a date for a company function and asks his sister’s new roommate, Emily.
Emily is an actress, waiting tables while starring in local plays and hoping for her big break. She agrees to be Philip’s date for the party, and soon they are attending one event after another together.
Philip and Emily click on many levels. Lines blur as the people they pretend to be start feeling like the people they are, causing a rift with Philip’s boyfriend Jason.
When Philip no longer works for the company, he doesn’t need Emily to play the role of his girlfriend anymore, but to his surprise, he can’t let her go.
I am a fan of Kim Cano’s books, with Eighty and Out being one of my favorites of hers. I wasn’t sure what I would think of His Secret Life but I gave it a shot and I am glad that I did! Philip is gay and falls in love with Emily after hiring her to act at his girlfriend for his work events, because he was too scared to come out to the people he worked with. As the saying goes, What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas. Philip and Emily were sent to Vegas to meet with a big new potential client for Philip, and while there, had a few too many times, and a good time. This was when they fell in love with each other. While it did take them a little bit of time after this to admit their feelings, or should I say, for Philip to admit his feelings, because Emily blurted it out to him at a party his sister threw. The plot was certainly intriguing. I thought it seemed like Emily and Philip were destined to be together from the beginning. He and she had so much in common, and from the first time they met, they clicked. I hate that workplace prejudice is so real, especially with high paying jobs and higher positions in the work place. It sucks, but that’s just how it is. That’s the type of world we’re living in.
