Audio Book, Book Review

Bright Side by Kim Holden

About the Book

Family Life/Romance
Date Published: July 4, 2014
Publisher: Do Epic, LLC

Everyone has one.
Some are bigger than others.
And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

Kate Sedgwick’s life has been anything but typical. She’s endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there’s a reason her best friend Gus calls her Bright Side). Kate is strong-willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She’s also never believed in love. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with Keller Banks.

They both feel it.
But they each have a reason to fight it.
They each have a secret.

And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

I have had the post for this review on my blog for over a week now, and I am just now getting around to getting this written. I feel like nothing I can say about this book will be good enough. It was absolutely fantastic. I could leave it at that, but I obviously won’t. This book came highly recommended to me by a local book club that I’m in, so since I had an extra Audiobook Credit, I used it on this book. I don’t know if I would have ever heard of Kim Holden and Bright Side had I not been a part of my book club! Thanks A Novel Bunch KC! Can I be the first one to say that I’m super glad I decided to get this in audio form and not in kindle/paperback form!? It would have probably taken me longer to finish it had I had to actually read it.

The narrators in this book were really good. Lidia Dornet (the voice of Kate aka Bright Side) did the part of Kate amazingly well. She NAILED Kate! I have talked to so many people about this book and shockingly enough, I have heard people say they didn’t like the book. I’ve never been one to go off other people’s feelings about a book. I have to judge it myself, because we are not all the same and do not all like the same stuff. Yeah, it’s a pretty depressing book at times, but the positivity coming out of Kate is strangely overwhelming.

Those are probably two of my favorite quotes from the book. Oh sure, there are more, but those are two of the ones that stick with me the most.

Kate is one of the best Heroines I’ve read about in a long time. She is the girl most want to be. Positivity oozes out of her like puss from a pimple and it’s a good thing. She has tons of friends and she’s easy to like. She made me laugh so many times throughout the book. One thing I would have changed about her is her black coffee habit. Please add some kind of flavor to your coffee, girl!

I’m going to finish this review by saying that this book made me want to be a better person. It made me think of the struggles people around me might have, it made me grateful for the life that I do have. This book broke my heart into a zillion pieces and it’s still not put back together. This book is going to have a super long lasting impression on me.

Some of my favorite things:

Reading (YA or New Adult), writing (especially on a productive day), the two coolest guys on the planet (my husband and son), my bicycle (hand built by my husband), Facebook (it’s an addiction at this point), iced coffee (hazelnut from McDonalds), and music (LOVE Sunset Sons, the 1975, Dredg, the xx, Balance and Composure, Teenage Bottlerocket, Manchester Orchestra, and 30 Seconds to Mars).

I also love dreaming. Big. Writing a few years ago was an elusive dream until I grabbed a hold of it with both hands and refused to let go. Keep chasing YOUR dreams …
